Ever have the thought, “what if we gave a party and nobody came?” That was NOT our problem on April 2nd at the first Salem Farmers Market, a wet and windy day. We arrived at 6:00 AM to find a well-organized operation and joined several other vendors waiting for a booth assignment. We went to our assigned spot and started setting up. Soon the tent was up, the van unloaded and parked. We turned the grills on early and the tent was warm and dry. When the market opened at 9AM we were ready. For most of the day we had both grills going and making crêpes. We had new crêpes — Egg & Sausage, Lemon & Sugar. And a new supplier of pears, E.Z. Orchards here in Silverton. They’ll have peaches this summer. Yum!
Many vendors stopped by to say hello and welcome to the market. Although the turnout was light, we had a great day. Our crêpes with local ingredients were so well received that we ran out of all of our savory crêpes by mid-afternoon. We had both grills running, sauteed onions on the side, and everyone was happy.
This is what we wanted – making and serving good food, talking with our customers about food and ingredients, and lifting people’s spirits with every bite. Thanks to every vendor, customer and supporter! See you next week.
